Extract this scenario into your orbiter folder. It will place a scenario called Moon_to_Mars.scn in your Orbiter scenarios folder. Run this scenario with limited fuel. The object is to manoevre the Deltaglider to Mars. Record your flight as proof of completion. Consider arrival at Mars a success if you are within 500 km agl of the surface of Mars and the Pe is anything from surface up to 30 km agl. (Meaning you are about to enter the atmosphere.) A tutorial with playback file will be uploaded on September 30th 2006. If you complete this task please send the recording files to me at 0730am -AT- gmail.com , and don't let other Orbiters know how you did it. I will compile and publish on this page a list of those completing the task and the date they did it.
News: August 17/2006. TWIFOSP has completed the challenge. It is a solution different than the solution to be shown in late September and is actually superior (IMO) as it gets to Mars a full 2 Earth years before my solution does. Congrats TWIFOSP!
OCT 1st 2006.
OK here are a couple of solutions to the challenge.
First is a great solution provided by TWIFOSP on 8-17-06. Here is the zip file. Extract the files into your Orbiter folder. The actual playback was almost identical to this, I took the liberty of reflying the task based on the numbers TWIFOSP supplied and smoothed out some of the burns and time warps.
Slightly more fuel usage was the original flight that was done to begin the challenge. The playback is annotated, and is available through this zip file.
